USC to meet with Floyd Wednesday
By Phil Kornblut
USC recruiters GA Mangus and Brad Lawing will meet with DL Sharrif Floyd (6-3 311) of Philadelphia Wednesday according to Floyd's assistant coach and adviser Andre Odom. The meeting is scheduled to take place Wednesday afternoon. Lawing will visit with OL Morgan Moses at Hargrave Prep, VA before flying to Philadelphia to meet up ith Mangus who will be flying in from Tampa. Miami is the only school to meet with Floyd thus far. Right now the Hurricanes are not a factor. Floyd has taken official visits to Florida, Southern Cal and Ohio State. The Trojans are not a factor at this point. Mangus and Lawing will try to get Floyd set up for an official visit during their meeting. December 18th is the earliest possibility because Floyd is flying out next week to Hawaii for an all star game. He will also play in the US Army All American Game early next month. He plans to announce his decision January 9th during the Army game. At this point USC, Florida and Ohio State appear to be the finalists with no favorite.

Floyd firms up visit date with USC
By Phil Kornblut
USC recruiters GA Mangus and Brad Lawing had about a two hour meeting with DL Sharrif Floyd (6-3 311) of Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon and they left with a firm visit date from Floyd of December 15-16. That's a mid week visit for Floyd who will have just returned from an all star game in Hawaii. Floyd's head coach Ron Cohen will make the trip with him. "Everything went real good, it was a good conversation," said Floyd's assistant coach Andre Odom. "They talked about how he would fit into their system and what the gameplan would be for him coming in. He really hit it off with coach Mangus and coach Lawing." Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel and some assistants are meeting with Floyd today. USC head coach Steve Spurrier is expected in next week. North Carolina also was in this week and coaches from Southern Cal and Florida are due in next week. Floyd has set an official visit with North Carolina for December 18th. He has taken officials to Florida, Southern Cal and Ohio State. There is no leader at this time according to Odom.

USC checking on kickers
By Phil Kornblut
USC special teams coach Shane Beamer is on the lookout for kicking help and has been investigating two prospects in Georgia, one for the 2010 class and one for 2011. Devon Pike of Warner Robins, GA is the senior and is considered to be one of the best kicks in his state. Beamer is looking for a kicker who specializes in kickoffs, and Pike could be that guy. The junior is Matt Ehasz of Kingsland. His Camden County High team is still in the playoffs. He connected on a 55 yard field goal in warm ups prior to his last game. Beamer plans to visit the school while he's on the road, and Ehasz plans to set up a visit to USC later this month. Georgia also is showing interest in Ehasz. He made an unofficial visit to Georgia for the Kentucky game. His team also practice in Athens last week and he was observed by the Bulldogs' kicking coach.

Tapley eliminates Miami from his list
By Phil Kornblut
It was thought that the biggest threat to USC for committed WR Sean Tapley (6-0 180) of Jacksonville, FL was Miami. That's no longer the case. "I'm finished with Miami," Tapley said Sunday. "I dropped them about a week ago." But that doesn't mean the Gamecocks still don't have competition. "North Carolina is pretty strong right now," Tapley said. "They tell me they need me, they want me. But, I feel real good about my commitment to South Carolina. It's still strong." North Carolina head coach Butch Davis will visit Tapley this week. And USC recruiter Steve Spurrier Jr., who visited last week, will be back this week as well. Tapley has official visits set with North Carolina for December 18th and USC for January 15th. This season he caught 33 passes for 609 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Moses has great time at USC
By Eric Guimaraes
OL Morgan Moses (6-7 320) of Fork Union Prep was in Columbia for an official visit at USC this weekend and had a great time. According to a source, Moses rated the visit a nine out of a possible ten. Moses was taken on a tour of the campus and watched some football at WIlliams-Brice during the Weekend of Champions. He met with players and coaches as well. North Carolina is his next destination and Moses will take that visit to Chapel HIll in two weeks. Sources close to the program say that Moses did not commit to the Gamecocks this weekend but that they are a factor with him. USC, Clemson, UNC, Auburn , Tennesse and Virginia, where he initially committed, are schools maintaining contact with the big lineman. Moses does not have a favorite but USC did make strides with him and opened his eyes to the school, according to a source.

No more visits for Hampton
By Phil Kornblut
DB Victor Hampton (5-10 175) of Darlington says he won't take any more official visits and is working on a decision between USC and Tennessee which he will announce at the Army All American Game in January. "I've seen all the schools I've wanted to see, so I don't see any reason to set any other visits," Hampton said. He added that Tennessee has been coming at him pretty hard. He took an official visit to USC in mid November, and he's taken unofficial visits to USC and Tennessee. Gamecock recruiter Ellis Johnson met with him last week. He might take in a bowl practice at USC. Hampton said there's no favorite between the Gamecocks and Vols right now.

Gilchrist confirms USC plans
By Phil Kornblut
LB Qua Gilchrist (6-2 230) of Butler JC, KS confirmed Tuesday night he will sign with USC tomorrow at 12:45 in his hometown of Abbeville. Gilchrist had been committed to Houston, but when USC assistant head coach for defense Ellis Johnson offered him Monday, he jumped at the chance. "It's a blessing," Gilchrist said. "When an SEC school gives you a chance, you've got to take it." Gilchrist also had offers from Kansas State, Kansas, Toledo and Northern Illinois. He was first contacted by USC's Dennis Thomas two weeks ago. He visited last Sunday and met with Johnson and other coaches. He was given a tour of the campus and facilities. "I had visited there in high school so I had seen it before," Gilchrist said. Playing running back at Abbeville High, Gilchrist earned a spot in the 2007 SCADA North-South Game. He committed to Newberry in January 2008 but later signed with Butler. He redshirted in 2008 and this season had 54 tackles and 5.5 sacks as an outside linebacker. He will have three years to play three. He is related to Clemson safety Marcus Gilchrist.
