BCS Title Picture is Coming Into View

Florida GatorsFollowing week number eleven's games, there are still six undefeated teams with their eye on the BCS Title.  Who are the teams and what are their chances to reach Pasadena in early January?  SECRivals takes a look at each team this week in a six part mini-series.

Who is currently sitting at the top of the pile in the race for the BCS Title?

Florida Gators (.9842 BCS Score)

The Florida Gators are still the number one ranked team in the nation and in the BCS Standings.  While the Gators have struggled on offense at times, never count an Urban Meyer coached team out.  While most of Florida's toughest games are in their rear view mirror, this team is not dominant enough to simply roll their helmets onto the field and scream "We are the Boys" and  expect to win.

That statement is true for every team vying for the championship because there is no true world-beating team this season.

The Gators face the Steve Spurrier coached South Carolina Gamecocks this weekend.  While the Gamecocks are showing some signs of a late season slide, Spurrier would like nothing better than to knock his alma mater out of the BCS Title picture.  Yes, you read that correctly, Spurrier would LOVE to beat the Gators for many reasons, among them the chance to muddle the title picture.

The following week, the Gators face an over matched team in The Swamp against Florida International.  This game should allow the Gators the opportunity to rest key players before the regular season finale against Florida State.

The Gators will face Florida State in The Swamp on November 28th.  While FSU's struggles are well known, and the Gators have a five game winning streak against the 'Noles, Bobby Bowden is in the same position as Spurrier is:  Bowden would love nothing better than to knock the Gators out of contention.

Can Florida run the table the last three weeks of the regular season to finish with the University's first undefeated season ever?  They should be able to.  While stranger things have happened, the Gators have more talent than anyone remaining on their schedule.  Plain and simple.

On the flip side of this, expect at least two of these opponents to throw the entire arsenal at the Gators in an attempt to upset the nation's number one team.  Steve Spurrier and Bobby Bowden did not accumulate their coaching records by accident.

Even after clearing these three obstacles, the Gators still face the Alabama Crimson Tide in Atlanta on December 5th to decide the SEC Championship.  The rematch of last season's Championship Game will be the dog fight that everyone is expecting.  We will go farther into detail in our SEC Championship Game Preview the last week of November.

SECRivals' Opinion:  The Gators should win out in the regular season.  While one of these games could be somewhat closer than expected, the Gators will again rely on defense to complete the season.  It is our opinion that the Gators have approximately a 65% chance of occupying one of the slots in the BCS Title Game.  Look for the Gators' experience in getting to (and winning) previous BCS Titles to keep the team settled.  Make no mistake about it, this Gator team has won two of the past three titles and would love nothing more than to make it three out of four years.
