College Football: Sunday Night College Huddle

football huddle

There are literally tons of items to look at from Saturday's action in the SEC and around the nation.  What stuck out most in your mind?  Was it LSU's lack of clock management, Charlie Weiss' Notre Dame squad falling to UConn?  Bring it on it and let's get the Sunday Night College Football Huddle going.

Tennessee Volunteers 31  Vanderbilt 16
Seriously, how painful was this game to watch?  UT fans can rejoice in the fact that indeed, the Vols are now bowl eligible.  The looming question:  UT is bowl eligible, but has shown difficulty selling out their own stadium.  If you are a representative for the Chik-fil-A bowl ... and you see empty seats in Neyland Stadium ... how well do you believe a seven win (max) Vol nation travels even to Atlanta?  The fans of the Orange and White have their sights set high ... there will be a LOT of disappointed people if a bid to the Music City Bowl comes in.

UConn 33  Notre Dame  30
Like 'em or hate 'em ... there is no excuse for Notre Dame winning fewer than eight games this season.  The Irish had a WEAK schedule and have lost to Navy and now UConn.  Not wanting to take anything away from those two football programs, but come on ... realistically, these two teams were scheduled as money games.

UConn showed up, ate the South Bend food, beat the local women in the back of the head, spanked the local college football team, and then left victorious.

Seriously, it is getting so bad at Notre Dame that my children look at me incredulously when I discuss Notre Dame's storied history.  My son has no idea that Notre Dame (once upon a time) was actually a solid program.

Weiss will be gone very soon, question is ... now that the Irish football team has fallen this far ... who in their right mind wants the job?  Money is not everything, there are easier places to coach, and honestly, unless Notre Dame relaxes their academic standards, winning will not be a priority on the field for this University.

Florida and Alabama continue to beat on undermanned squads
The top two teams in the nation whacked their cupcake opponents by a combined score of 107-3.  I realize these schedules are generally set years in advance, also realize that the BCS formula no longer considers strength of schedule, and why not schedule a money game just before Thanksgiving ... but it's still ridiculous ... the twelfth game was not added to the college schedules for crap like this.

Ole Miss 25  LSU 23
Everything you need to know about this game can be found in a previous article ... I am still shaking my head 24-hours later.

Duke led the Miami Hurricanes in the fourth quarter ... only to give up 21 fourth quarter points ... David Cutcliffe has done an amazing job at Duke.  Not many would have thought that Coach Cut could have gotten the Blue Devils this close to bowl eligibility in only his second season.

Will West of HardKnoxSports.com tells me that he would be shocked if LSU's Larry Porter does not get the Memphis Tigers coaching position.  Then again, if you read SECRivals or HardKnoxSports.com, then you would know that this was revealed around week three of the college football season ... is Tommy West still denying it?

If you aren't reading Aaron Torres' blog, then you have no clue what you are missing.  I dropped the ball on this one coming into the weekend (gotta work), but I am telling you, Aaron is one of the bright minds on the college scene.

Which team gets the BCS screw job this season?  Honestly, let's face it:  Florida or Alabama is going to play for the national title.  That only leaves one spot open for the next opponent victim of the SEC.  The SEC will win another championship this year.  All Texas has to do is win the rest of their games by a single point each and the Longhorns are in the BCS Title Game.  TCU and Boise State both could beat the Longhorns.  My guess is that TCU gets a fabulous bowl bid, leaving Boise State out in the cold.

How big of an idiot is Kansas' Mangino?  The KU administration should have taken the proactive steps of firing this clown for his treatment of his players ... now that the school basically has done nothing (awaiting lawyer's reports), they are wide open for lawsuits.  I know, I know, we are talking about grown college kids being yelled at by a football coach ... Mangino had better be glad one of those kids wasn't mine ... he would be crapping his teeth out of his fat butt for a month.

Am I the only one thinking this has been a college football season to forget?  Seriously, the parity has watered leveled the playing field for several teams, but still ... the scheduling should be performed by a central authority ... get rid of the late season cupcake games, create likable match-ups ...
