SEC Football Thoughts

gfdghtytrDarrell is down with a virus, so here comes the deluded thoughts of an old man regarding the football from this past week.

Tennessee takes down Kentucky for the 25th straight time.  Honestly, as a UT fan, I knew the Wildcats would give UT all they could handle.  Going into the game, I was shocked that so many people picked against the Vols.  Anyone that knows anything about football knows that a running game will win nine out of ten times.

Charlie Weiss ... he done yet?  Anyone else sick of hearing about his butt?  Let's get real.  He had success at New England because he was videotaping his opponents' practices.  Apparently he was incapable of getting that done at Notre Dame.  Considering he came into Notre Dame such an aloof idiot, it's only fitting he leaves ND with his tail between his legs.  10-1 says he goes back to the NFL as an assistant and never re-enters the college game.

Auburn pulled Alabama's pants down around their ankles in this year's version of the Iron Bowl.  The Tigers shoulda, coulda, woulda won  this game.  AU to the Chik-fil-A Bowl?  That's a fair bet as is Florida will win the SEC Championship this coming weekend.

Have the Florida Gators begun to peak this late in the season or are they playing such crappy teams it's an optical illusion?  Honestly, I can not tell.

What is the deal with SEC football this year? I am saying the conference is down once you get below the top two (Florida and Bama), but nearly anyone in the 7-5 log jam is capable of beating anyone in the nation ... only to have the ability to turn around and lose to Slippery Rock the next week.  This has been a crazy season.

Will Ryan Mallet turn pro after this season? He has the tools, but is the epitomy of being a system quarterback.  In my opinion, he should stay at least one more season because he has much to learn about reading NFL caliber defenses and could use some help learning how to 'put touch' on the ball.  I guess the prospects of an NFL rookie salary cap will chase him into the draft.

Darrell, Gil, and I have said it all season:  there is no world beating team in college football this year. This is perhaps the worst regular season on record, but there are six undefeated teams ... go figure on that one.  Boise State will be screaming from the rafters when they get the Golden Screw again this year.  TCU could beat Cincinatti and Boise State on a neutral field, home, or away ... the Horned Frogs are that good.

How sad is it to see an elite athlete like Eric Berry get so close to breaking a record (interception return yards), but will likely end his career eight yards short?

Over rated:  The Texas Longhorns.  As long as Texas wins its conference championship, they will be in the BCS title game.  The Longhorns will be beaten like a dog in this game if they make it.  Take that one to your bookie.

How cool was Mississippi State's win over the Ole Miss Rebels in the Egg Bowl? Dan Mullen has gained a statement win in his first season.  What will Mullen be able to do with an SEC caliber quarterback under center?

Check out Aaron Torres' take on the Iron Bowl.  I agree with Darrell, keep your eye on Aaron, he is a fabulous writer with a heck of a wit about him.

HardKnoxSports.com:  Schagren has a pretty good rambling rant to check out

Florida has opened as a 5 1/2 point favorite over Alabama ... Darrell has been telling me for a month to look for the Gators to win this game (late) by at least 8-11 points.  When I spoke to him earlier, he told me that he would not be shocked to see Bama leading late into the fourth quarter 13-7 and for Tebow to go off on the Crimson Tide for two TD's late to win 21-13.  Yes, that is going to be Darrell's score prediction later for this week.  He said that even though he had picked Bama in the BCS Title game as recently as ten days ago, he is going to stick with his pre-season prediction of Florida playing for another Waterford Football.
