Zach Mettenberger went from G-Day Game fan favorite to dismissed from the team ... in a week. Right.
Many knew about Mettenberger's recent troubles with underage drinking and possession of illegal ID's not mixing with Valdosta law enforcement. That happened.
At the same time, how many people honestly expected a one-game suspension and some stadium steps as punishment. According to the AJC, Mettenberger was dismissed from the team due to his violation of team rules.
Does Mettenberger's suspension go deeper than what is being seen on the surface?
OK, you have a Freshman quarterback and he is pretty good good enough to challenge for the starting job for your SEC football team. Being an 18 year old kid, away from home for obviously the first time, with a HUGE spotlight on him ... one has to kind of expect this type of action by the kid. Face it, he is still a kid ... who screwed up royally.
By why the sudden dismissal? Seriously ... a week after statistically leading all UGA quarterbacks in the Spring Game ... he is dismissed?
As UGA or even SEC fans in general, if you are not being at least a tad bit skeptical on this situation, then you are simply blind.
While we may never know the exact reasons surrounding the dismissal ... UGA would have dismissed him prior to the Spring Game to prevent the team from wasting the snaps ... it is quite telling the dismissal was announced on a Sunday morning. Do the math on that one.
From David Hale's Site: Head coach Mark Richt had said throughout the spring that Mettenberger would face a minimum of a one-game suspension for the arrest in Remerton, but had failed to set a specific timetable on when the quarterback might return to action. Georgia sports information director Claude Felton confirmed Sunday that the dismissal did not stem from a new incident or arrest involving Mettenberger. Felton said Richt informed Mettenberger of the decision Sunday and was unlikely to make additional public comments on the quarterback's situation in the near future.
So ... the official word is that no new incident caused the dismissal. So, Mark Richt's staff allowed him to continue to compete for the starting position ... knowing they could possibly let him go anyway? That makes about as much sense ... hell, it makes ZERO freaking sense ... BUT, if you are a high school football player ... this definitely has to turn your head and make you wonder .... what if that were to be you?
