Ole Miss 25 LSU 23
LSU attempted a screen pass late in their contest against Ole Miss ... when the ball carrier was tackled for a loss, there were 25 seconds remaining. The entire LSU staff waited until nine seconds remained before calling their final time-out.
On what turned out to be LSU's final play of the game, the Tigers converted a fourth-and-twenty-six. Eventhough the Tigers gained a first down, only one second remained on the clock and again, no one knew what to do. As the ball was snapped, the clock wound down and the Ole Miss Rebels won the game. While we are not saying that LSU could have or should have beaten the Rebels, the LSU coaching staff let this game get away from them.
Les Miles will be absolutely grilled this coming week for allowing a game to slip away due to extremely poor clock management.
100 years from now, when our great-grandchildren read the sports almanacs, that will still be the score. No matter how you slice and dice this game, LSU fans must have an empty feeling in the pits of their stomachs from the finish. How does a coach lead his team in the final minutes of a game only to become so wrapped up inside of the game to squander any shot for his team to actually win?
We have all been there ... it does not matter if you never played college football, high school football, or even grasshopper league football. Chances are, you have been there even if it was on an X-box or Playstation console ... when the clock is ticking with less than a minute to play ... and you have one time out remaining ... and you lose a TON of yards on a screen pass ... YOU CALL THE TIME OUT.
Why did LSU wait almost fifteen seconds before burning their final time out? No one will likely ever know, but one thing is for certain, it is an inexcusable absence of thought AND LSU fans now have yet another item to lambast their coach with.
P.S. Ole Miss thanks LSU for their bid to the Capital One Bowl
